The cheapest reception activities use things you already have: paper, pens, a borrowed game, and your guests' phones. Choose three or four, print the cards, and give each to a friend to run so you can stay at the party.

This list is different from our 25 wedding guest activities: every idea here is low-cost and needs only simple supplies.

Before dinner

  1. ·Borrowed lawn games. Ask friends to lend cornhole, hoops, or bocce.
  2. ·Wedding bingo. Printed cards with squares like "someone who flew in."
  3. ·Photo scavenger hunt. Use our free printable.
  4. ·DIY photo backdrop. Fabric, paper, or greenery and tape.
  5. ·Coloring pages for kids.

At the table

  1. ·Table question cards.
  2. ·Couple trivia. Five light questions between courses.
  3. ·Advice and wishes cards.
  4. ·Table superlatives. Tables choose a winner for "best dancer" and similar.
  5. ·Toast-along cards. Guests finish a sentence.
  6. ·Memory jar.
  7. ·Family recipe swap. A keepsake that costs a pack of cards.
  8. ·Photo strip pose cards.

Music and dancing

  1. ·Song request cards.
  2. ·Guest-built playlist.
  3. ·Request-only first dance hour.
  4. ·Name that tune. The DJ plays ten seconds of a song.

Keepsakes and send-off

  1. ·Open-when envelopes. See guest book alternatives.
  2. ·Chalk message wall.
  3. ·Bubble send-off, with venue approval.

Keep costs honest

Add up paper, printing, and supplies before you commit. Cheap ideas still cost time, so give each activity one owner. For the overall picture, see how to save money on a wedding.

Where a shared camera fits

If you want one low-cost keepsake that runs itself, print one QR code per table. Guests scan, shoot with a shot limit, and the photos stay together in one roll. No app, no account. See QR code ideas.

Set a small budget and a count

Before you pick activities, decide two numbers: how much you will spend in total, and how many activities you actually need. Three or four is enough for most receptions. The Knot's 2023 Real Weddings Study found 75% of couples called the guest experience the most crucial part of planning, but that does not mean a packed schedule. Among couples who added entertainment, 61% chose a photo booth and 20% chose games, so most receptions use only one or two.

A cost-per-activity worksheet

For each activity you choose, list four items: supplies, printing, who runs it, and what happens afterward.

| Activity | Supplies | Printing | Runs it | Afterward | |---|---|---|---|---| | Table question cards | Cards | One per table | Nobody | Collect as a keepsake | | Song request cards | Cards, a box | One per table | DJ | Pass the box to the DJ | | Borrowed lawn games | Games from friends | None | A friend | Return the games | | Photo challenge | QR card | One per table | Nobody | Reveal the roll |

Fill in your own prices. The goal is to see the total before you commit.

Pick by the venue's space

  • ·Small indoor room: table cards, trivia, song requests.
  • ·Garden or lawn: lawn games, a chalk wall, bubbles at the send-off.
  • ·A venue with a dance floor and a bar: a request-only first dance hour, name that tune.
  • ·Rain risk: keep at least two activities that work indoors.

Make each one self-running

An activity that needs the couple is not working. Write the instructions on the card or sign, so a guest can start without help. Assign one friend as a backup and give them a printed page of instructions, not a verbal briefing.

Safety and etiquette

  • ·Check venue rules before using bubbles, confetti, chalk or sparklers.
  • ·Keep games with moving objects away from tables and walkways.
  • ·Offer something for kids, since a bored child can end a parent's evening.
  • ·Make participation optional and invisible, so a guest who skips it loses nothing.

What to skip

Skip anything that needs a microphone, a volunteer or a long explanation. Skip games that single out one guest. And skip duplicating: three games of the same kind compete with each other.

Where a shared camera fits

A shared camera is one of the cheapest activities because it runs itself. A QR card on each table lets guests shoot with no app to install. You set a shot limit and choose when the photos are revealed. The printable cards above include a photo challenge. See wedding QR code ideas and how to collect guest photos.
